Artist’s conception of Orion module in Lunar Orbit

A spacecraft built for humans left the domain of low-Earth orbit Friday for the first time in 42 years when NASA’s first Orion soared 3,604 miles above Earth and returned safely hours later, having accomplished a flawless flight test as part of NASA’s journey to Mars. — NASA

Yesterday’s test of the unmanned Orion capsule was intense, at times excruciating (when the livestream signal dropped), and ultimately exhilarating. Below are a few of my live screencaps:

It has been said many times that Orion is an initial step toward the transportation of humans to Mars and the asteroids. Of course it is. But let’s not lose sight of the first real trip Orion’s going to make: back to The Moon, my friends.
