In 2011, a combination of genre professionals and fans from the international scene and the United States gathered together to create the World SF Travel Fund. The fund was set up to enable one or two international persons involved in science fiction, fantasy or horror to travel to a major genre event. This year’s recipients are:

Csilla Kleinheincz is a Hungarian-Vietnamese writer living in Kistarcsa, Hungary with her husband and daughter. She is the author of two novels and a short story collection. Her stories can be read in English in the anthologies Interfictions, Heiresses of Russ 2011, and The Apex Book of World SF 2. Some of her stories were translated into Portuguese, Finnish, Czech and Estonian. Csilla is also a translator of works by Peter S. Beagle, Kelly Link, Ursula K. Le Guin and Catherynne M. Valente. She currently works as the editor of the SF/F publishing house Ad Astra, and in her free time edits the Hungarian online SF magazine SFmag.

Rochita Loenen-Ruiz is a Filipino writer of science fiction and fantasy. A graduate of the Clarion West Writer’s Workshop, Rochita was the recipient of the 2009 Octavia Butler Scholarship, and the first Filipina writer to attend Clarion West. Her short fiction has appeared in a variety of online and print publications, including Interzone, Fantasy Magazine, Apex Magazine, Weird Tales, and the anthologies Robots: The Recent A.I., and The Apex Book of World SF 2. In the Philippines, her short fiction has been published in Philippine Panorama, Philippine Speculative Fiction 2, and Philippine Speculative Fiction 4. Rochita currently resides in the Netherlands with her husband and her two children.

The Fund has set up a Peerbackers Project with the hope of raising $3000, enabling two years of running. The Board, tasked with selecting future candidates, is composed of Lauren Beukes, Aliette de Bodard, Nnedi Okorafor, Ekaterina Sedia, and Charles Tan, reflecting the truly international nature of the SF world today. BETTER THINGS: The Life and Choices of Jeffrey Catherine Jones

Change is only the beginning. This film is about how an artist etched his humanity on a world of limited expectations.

Maria Carbardo, Director, says:

I specifically embarked on this project to allow change to come into my life. It has been a long and remarkable journey, one that has introduced me to dozens of extraordinary people and revealed life-changing knowledge and wisdom.

Begun in July 2009 and finished in October 2012, the documentary feature BETTER THINGS: The Life and Choices of Jeffrey Catherine Jones was initially funded by donations and loans from friends and family. Much of the work for the film was done either on a volunteer basis or for deferred payments.

This Indiegogo campaign represents the next step in my film’s journey — bringing the final product to audiences everywhere. If I meet my goal, I will be able to pay my outstanding production debts and also complete a companion DVD of supplementary material to accompany the feature. With the recent passing of both the subject of the film and the internationally famed artist Moebius, who was interviewed extensively for the project, it is more important than ever to communicate their thoughts and ideas as well as those of all the artists appearing in the film.

Members of the artistic community and their friends have been incredibly generous with their support, and without them this film could never have been made. However, the donations I received during filming were quickly consumed in the production process, leaving post-production expenses of distribution, marketing and packaging still to be addressed.

Although the chances for a theatrical release are low, I am actively pursuing that channel through the festival circuit as well as proceeding with a more standard DVD release. Much of the artwork featured in the film has never been showcased on a large screen before, and the effect of seeing it in a full-sized theater is transporting for both newcomers to the work and established fans.

In the end, I believe that people need to hear stories about art — its aspirations, its history, its rewards — to understand how it reflects our humanity back to us.

WHERE THE MONEY WILL GO:

1. Payment to the production crews — camera, sound, lighting and editing.

2. Payment to the post-production crews — sound mix, color grading and final dvd conversions.

3. Production legal service fees/License fees.

4. Editing and post-production on the bonus DVD featuring interviews not included in the feature (There are at least 40 hours of interviews available, covering a wide range of topics, including inspiration, techniques, fine arts vs. illustration, artist’s block, depression, substance abuse, etc.).Please check out the video containing some of the cut footages in the Gallery Section.

5. If possible, repayment to friends and family.

6. Marketing and advertising expenses.

 

RISKS AND CHALLENGES

When I first began working on this film, I did a Kickstarter campaign to raise production money. I was unsuccessful in that early effort, which did not surprise me — I was a novice filmmaker with no credits, after all, an unknown quantity to most potential donors.

At this stage, however, there is no longer any risk that the film will not be made. BETTER THINGS is a reality, thanks to everyone who believed in it and were willing to share their time and talent with me. The challenge now is to find the funds to repay these people and bring the film to the widest audience possible and share the story of Jeffrey Catherine Jones and his art.

I would like to thank Julianna Jones Arms for her unwavering commitment and involvement with this project and also for the fans’ continuing support in helping me finish the film.

The Guerrilla Shakespeare Project is proud to announce the world premiere production of THE TRAGEDY OF ARTHUR BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, A PLAY BY ARTHUR PHILLIPS. Having always approached Shakespeare’s texts as if they were new work, Guerrilla Shakespeare is ecstatic to hold the exclusive rights to the first “Shakespeare” premier in over 400 years. 

GSP originally hosted a sold out reading of acclaimed author Arthur Phillips’ play at The Public Theater last summer that American Theater Magazine called a “full-throttle reading” of a “swashbuckling, blood-and-guts five-act history play”. Mr. Phillips was so impressed by the reading that he has agreed to collaborate with Guerrilla Shakespeare, and together we will create a full stage production of THE TRAGEDY OF ARTHUR in New York City. “If Shakespeare had just finished a new play in 2011, I am confident that GSP is the company he would turn to for the premiere.” says Phillips.

THE TRAGEDY OF ARTHUR centers around the discovery of a lost Shakespeare play and the doubts surrounding its origins. It is an evening of fraud, forgery and illegitimacy, and the story of King Arthur from the Bard’s point of view. It is an epic tale of war, love and the audacity (folly?) of peace. “There’s only war. ‘Tis man’s inheritance.” (Act IV, Scene I)

King Arthur is a play full of Shakespeare’s language, poetry, insight, drama, beauty, and history; yet it’s not by Shakespeare. But then again, even Will didn’t know he was “Shakespeare”. “What man knows aught of his chronicle?” (Act V)

Does our birth decide our destiny? Can a bastard be a king? Can a modern man write Shakespeare?

Apex Publications presents Glitter & Madness

It all started on Twitter. We were basking in the glow of Chicago’s Worldcon and missing that special feeling that comes from hanging out with friends at a convention.

John mentioned that if he went to next year’s Worldcon in San Antonio, he wanted to throw a glitter party for all the science fiction and fantasy people that he knows. Michael helpfully showed John a link to The Rollercade, San Antonio’s #1 roller skating rink that does black light/glow-in-the-dark roller skate parties. Not exactly a glitter party (and what was that anyway?) but pretty awesome nonetheless.

We decided in an instant that not only were we going to the San Antonio Worldcon, but that we had to go to The Rollercade for a glow-in-the-dark roller skating party.

But why just throw a glow-in-the-dark roller skating party when you can also make it a book release party? And what’s better than a glow-in-the-dark roller skating party celebrating a book about the secret history of 20th Century nightlife/party culture?

Nothing, that’s what.

So we’re editing, assembling, and printing an anthology as a co-production with Apex Publications between now and August of 2013 when we’re all in San Antonio for Worldcon. Yes, that’s foolish and overly optimistic, but it fits the title that Kat Howard unintentionally gave us: Glitter and Madness. Lynne quickly crafted a writing prompt:

Roller Derby, nightclubs, glam aliens, (literal) party monsters, drugs, sex, glitter, debauchery, etc.

Glitter & Madness will be published by Apex Publications and will feature a standalone novella from New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire set in her InCryptid universe. We also have commitments from other talented writers including Alan DeNiro, Amal El-Mohtar, Daryl Gregory, Damien Walters Grintalis, Maria Dahvana Headley, Kat Howard, Jennifer Pelland, Tim Pratt, Cat Rambo, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Diana Rowland, Sofia Samatar, David J. Schwartz, and William Shunn. There will be an open reading period so we can uncover glamorous writers that we’ve overlooked.

Glitter & Madness: The Speculative Nightclub Anthology is looking for a few glamorous stories.

As you know, we’ve got fabulous work from amazing writers like Alan DeNiro, Amal El-Mohtar, Daryl Gregory, Damien Walters Grintalis, Maria Dahvana Headley, Kat Howard, Seanan McGuire, Jennifer Pelland, Tim Pratt, Cat Rambo, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Diana Rowland, Sofia Samatar, David J. Schwartz, and William Shunn.

But what about you? You’re glamorous, right? We bet you have a dazzling idea for a story, don’t you? You probably even know the prompt by heart:

Roller Derby, nightclubs, glam aliens, (literal) party monsters, drugs, sex, glitter, debauchery, etc.

Well, if you aren’t already writing, you should start now!

Here’s the details you’ve been waiting for:

  1. We’re opening to submissions (there are multiple slots open) when the Kickstarter reaches 50% funding.
  2. The max word limit is 6000 with a deadline of March 15 (you know, beware the Ides yadda yadda yadda).
  3. We’re paying $.05 per word.
  4. You’ll have the chance to be edited by Hugo Award-winning editors and be in a ToC with awesome authors (see above).

Preview Cover Sketches at 75% Funding

One can only imagine what sort of wild cover a speculative nightclub anthology will have. That’s more true than you think.

There is one person who can imagine that: Galen Dara. Check out her portfolio and we think you’ll agree with us. There’s something so moving and evocative of her artwork that we felt it was a perfect match.

If there’s anyone who can capture the nightclub roller derby debauchery the stories this anthology have, it’s Galen Dara.

We know that she’s working hard on cover ideas (you can see our Pinterest board for where her inspirations are coming from) and we want to share that with you.

Once we hit 75% funding, we’ll have cover sketches to show you. So now there’s at least two things to shoot for:

  • Open to submissions at 50%
  • Cover preview at 75%

And we have at least one more kick-ass piece we’re working on that we hope to announce soon!

About the Reward Tiers

We’ve priced our reward tiers so that if you contribute to our Kickstarter, you’re basically placing a pre-order. Every backer who selects one of our reward levels will get a copy of the anthology in either electronic or print format (and often both!)

About the Funding

The money raised by this project will go into creating the most amazing anthology possible.The costs include a stunning cover, paying authors professional rates for their work (at least 5 cents per word), the Rollercade Glow Party at Lone Star Con III, and promotion. Anything raised above and beyond our stated goal will go towards paying more money to the authors.

There are challenges to this project. We’re on a super-tight deadline. If we’re going to launch the book in August (yes, this year’s August!) we’ll need finished stories around March so that we can edit the stories and get them ready to go to a printer in early summer so that copies are available.

So not only is this deadline difficult for the authors and editors, but for our publisher as well. That said, we all feel energized and excited by this project and look forward to getting it started!

Beyond the deadline there’s all the typical risks and challenges that any book faces. Writing is not production line work. Authors can’t necessarily just push start and have a story one week later. All creative endeavors face this risk, but we know that those writers who have signed on will get us great work.
